Integral (through-mix) colour vs surface colour
- Integral or through-mix colour: pigment is mixed through the whole batch, so the colour runs through the slab. Chips and wear commonly show less.
- Surface colour: colour is applied to the top of the slab during finishing or afterwards. It can give stronger tones but typically depends more on the surface staying intact.
Your concreter will explain which methods they use and what suits your project.
Choosing a colour, and fading in strong sun
Perth's strong UV can soften colours over time. Darker colours can also absorb more heat. Colours on a small sample often look different across a whole driveway, so ask to see larger samples or finished examples where possible.
Sealing
A sealer is commonly recommended to help protect colour and resist staining. It typically needs reapplying over time.
Borders and feature bands
A contrasting border, band or edge strip in a different colour or finish can frame the driveway or link it to paths. These usually add some extra work, so ask about them when comparing quotes.
